When Shakespeare says to the Doctor, how can a man so young have eyes so old,and the Doctor replies,I read a lot, what does Shakespeare then say to the Doctor?
To me it sounds like you should do what I do,and then I can't hear it properly .I have re-listened to it endless times, and its just driving me mad.

Shp: How can a man so young have eyes so old?
Doc: I do a lot of reading.
Shp: A trite reply, yeah, that's what I do.
I'm not sure if he means he also does a lot of reading or that he also covers the truth by making trite replies. I suspect the latter. He knows there's more to the Doctor than meets the eye and the Doctors small smile suggests he knows that Shakespeare's onto him.

I agree that it`s probably the latter, and the scene does make a little more sense with that line included, especially the wonderful line when the Doctor says nighty, night Shakespeare.
The Doctor knows he`s got a good measure of him,and he`s suitably impressed.
Thank you!
